Defenders set to take the “Edge”
If there was ever a time to give indoor football a chance, it’s this weekend as the 3-2 Oklahoma Defenders take on the Bloomington Edge this Saturday night at 7:05pm in the Cox Business Center. The team is coming off a hotly contested 73-61 victory over the Lincoln Haymakers on the road last Saturday that saw kicker Tommy Frevert turn in a performance worthy of the Champions Professional Indoor Football League player of the week honors. Frevert split the uprights five times on five attempts, including a kick from 53-yards out to help his team to victory and to snap a two-game losing streak. In all, Frevert field goals were of 53, 46, 24, 30, and 29 yards. Frevert did not miss a kick in the game as he also went 8-for-8 on extra points giving him 23 points for the game. The 23 points is the most ever scored in a single game by a kicker in CPIFL history. As of this writing he has amassed 50 points in five games off of his foot, which places him in the lead among all CPIFL kickers.
Last season Tommy Frevert played for the Kansas Koyotes and was acquired by the Defenders in the off season. His was not the only storyline to come out of the game last weekend. The game in Lincoln proved to be a pretty good street fight, all things considered, with the Defenders scoring 20+ points in three of the games four quarters. Lincoln proved up to the challenge most of the way through, scoring the same amount in two of the four frames.
Brady May, in his third start for the Defenders, had a decent day, completing 11 of 34 pass attempts for 134 yards the three touch downs, and Packy Jones caught six passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns and May found Matt Rice twice for 27 yards and a score. Kingjack Washington galloped 18 time for 82 years and a score, while Jamario Thomas carried the ball twice for 16 yards and scored twice.
The Defender continued to dominate defensively. Ronnell Lewis made nine tackles with four solo stops, they dropped Lincoln quarterback Chuck Wright in the end zone near the end of the first half and Lewis’ former OU Sooners teammate Sam Proctor picked off Lincoln quarterback Wright late in the game to seal the victory for the visitors.
The opponent on Saturday is the Bloomington Edge. Last season the Edge defeated the Defenders 44-39 in their only meeting last season. This year the edge are winless in four outings thus far this season and are hungry for their first win. They are helmed under center by quarterback Charles Dowdell, who at this writing has thrown 117 times for 71 completions and fifteen touchdowns. His favorite targets are Marcus Lewis, (28 catches, 381 yards, eight touchdowns), and LaVaughn Macon, (17 catches, 181 yards, three touchdowns).
On the ground, Andre Raymond has galloped 143 yards on 39 carries for 17 touches. So though the Edge have yet to put a game in the win column, the Defenders do have a worthy opponent invading the CBC Arena this weekend, and it should be a great game.
This weekend is a great weekend to give the Oklahoma Defenders a try. The team is hosting Community night, where the special offer is a ticket discount is for kids 12 and under, who will be able to get into the game for just $5. Every fan through the door will also receive a poster, which can be used when the Defenders take to the field after the game for the autograph session. This coincides with the traditional tailgate hosted by the Regulators, the official Oklahoma Defenders booster club, in the Baxter’s Interurban parking lot starting at 2pm.
