Hot Club of Cowtown at Cain's

It will be a swinging good time in Tulsa on Saturday, January 2, 2009 when Hot Club of Cowtown hit Cain's Ballroom Main Stage.  The three piece band will heat up the cold Tulsa night with classic Western Swing and hot jazz. 

For well over a decade, Hot Club of Cowtown has been converting casual listeners into slack-jawed fans by virtue of their astonishing ability to absorb a broad variety of old-school musical styles and invest them with contemporary verve and fresh passion. To that end, HCC benefits from an embarrassment of riches: Whit Smith’s fleet-fingered guitaring approximates the swinging fluidity of Les Paul and the gypsy Jazz textures of Stephane Grappelli, violinist Elana James nimbly combines her Classical training with an unerring Country/Swing/Jazz intuition and Jake Erwin provides the reliably perfect pulse on upright bass. Hot Club is touring in support of their first studio release in 5 plus years, Wishful Thinking, a disc that features renditions of Bob Wills' “Can’t Go On This Way,” the laconic Country lope of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Georgia,” the Appalachian Gospel sigh of Tom Waits’ “The Long Way Home,” and an achingly beautiful Jazzgrass take on the Gershwins’ “Someone to Watch Over Me.”

Opening up for HCCT is local band Three Penny Upright.  Three Penny was discovered by legendary country artist, Lorretta Lynn.  Three  Penny Upright are, singers and musicians Amy Amatucci and Mary Perisho, along with guitar and banjo-master John Lanford, and bassist Don Geesling.  The name, that was thought of by Amatucci and Perisho, is meant to evoke a long-gone era when pennies could buy a good time and “upright” could mean instruments or back-alley shenanigans. The two take their musical cues from classic Country, Bluegrass, Rockabilly, and a little Jazz, and blend the style with their witty, sassy, and sometimes heartbreaking lyrics.
