Shock skid ends with 75-70 road win
San Antonio, TX. - Ivory Latta led the Tulsa Shock (4-15) with 15 points, all by way of the long-ball, while Tiffany Jackson added 12 points as the Shock snapped their 12-game losing streak with a 75-70 win over the San Antonio Silver Stars (6-12) Friday at the AT&T Center. Jackson hit two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to secure the win for the Shock. For the first time in what seems like an eternity, the Shock held on to a slim lead throughout the final quarter after entering the frame down by two.
The Shock started off strong, hitting nine of 14 shots from the field to take a 21-19 lead into the first break. Jennifer Lacy led the Shock in the opening period with five points as the Shock opened the game with a 12-4 run before the Silver Stars closed the gap.
San Antonio tied the match at the 6:24 mark of the second on a Roneeka Hodges trey. From there the two squads traded the lead three times before San Antonio took a 37-35 lead into the locker room at halftime thanks to a pair of free throws from Becky Hammon. Scholanda Robinson contributed seven points for the Shock in the second quarter.
The Silver Stars looked to take control in the third quarter, as they maintained a seven point lead through much of the period. Down by six with 2:31 remaining, the Shock used a 10-5 run to pull within two points by the end of the quarter. Jackson sank two free throws, then Latta and Kiesha Brown hit consecutive three-pointers before Kara Braxton closed out the scoring for the Shock with a layup with 24-seconds left.
Latta re-claimed the lead for Tulsa on a three-pointer 17-seconds into the final frame before Jayne Appel hit a jumper to give San Antonio a two-point lead. From there the Shock went on to hit seven of 13 shots from the field to hold on and eventually secure the win. Jackson was three-of-three from the charity stripe in the final quarter, and finished the night hitting six-of-seven from the line.
While the team would liked to have celebrated the win, they had little time to do so. In the wacky world of WNBA scheduling, Tulsa's reward for narrowly missing out on tying their franchise record losing streak is a Saturday night contest against the reigning league champion Phoenix Mercury. The Mercury (7-12) will play host to the Shock in a 9 p.m. tip-off at US Airways Center.
