Trevor Cann named CHL Goalie Of The Week.
After a stellar performance in the first two games of the young season Tulsa Oilers goaltender Trevor Cann has bee named the Oakley CHL Goalie of the week for the week ending October 17, 2010.
The native of Oakville, Ontario stopped 59 of 63 shots in a home-and-home opening weekend sweep of the Wichita Thunder, stopping 24 shots in the Oilers 4-3 victory in the amazing BOK Center on Friday night and an impressive 35 stops on the road in Wichita when the Oilers downed the Thunder 4-1.
The 47th overall pick by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft played in the NHL’s 2010 preseason with the Avs and spent time in the American Hockey League with Lake Erie last season playing 13 games. For Tulsa during the 2009-10 season, the 5-11, 180-pound netminder went 11-6-1 with a 2.81 goals against average.
Cann’s recognition from the league capped off an outstanding start to the 2010-11 season for the Tulsa Oilers. Mike Beausoleil scored a rare shorthanded goal on Friday night. With the Oilers trailing 3-2 and on a two man disadvantage, Beausoleil lifted a shot from the right point that eluded Wichita goaltender Ian Keserich, tying the game on the Oilers two-man shorthanded goal.
The Oilers special teams played a key role in last weekend’s two wins. The Oilers have killed nine of 10 shorthanded situations (including scoring a shorthanded goal) for a 90 on percent penalty killing efficiency. On the flipside, the Oilers scored three power play goals in 10 opportunities for a 30 percent success rate.
