Oilers have an up and down weekend

The Tulsa Oilers took to the road to visit two teams in the Turner Conference this weekend as the 2010-11 season heads toward the All-Star Break.

Friday night saw the Oilers visit the Quad City Mallards for the first time. Forward Jack Combs would score two goals and two more would be added by Evan Kotsopoulos and Anthony Battaglia as Tulsa would cruise to a 4-2 victory.

Saturday saw the Oilers travel to Independence, Missouri to take on the Mavericks, a team that has lingered around the top of the Turner Conference all season and a ream that the Oilers have yet to overcome this year so far. Missouri would prevail in the contest by a score of 3-2, on goals by Toby Lafance, Bill Vandermeer and Olivier Filion, while Oilers points leader Chad Costello would score his 20th goal of the season Sean Erickson would score his eighth in the game. 

Now the Oilers and the rest of the league will take a short hiatus while the CHL celebrates their annual mid-season classic in Rapid City South Dakota as the Rapid City Rush hosts the All-Star Game. The Rush, who won last year’s CHL Ray Miron President’s Cup, will play a composite team of All-Stars from the remaining teams in the league.

Oilers player-assistant coach and defenseman Derek Eastman and Oilers trainer Stuart Nichols will represent Tulsa in the game. Eastman has 25 points recorded from 9 goals and 16 assists. Stuart Nichols will tend to the medical needs for the CHL all-star team. He earns the honor after being named the medical trainer of the year in the CHL for 2009-10. This is Nichols’ second selection as an all-star trainer. He also worked the 2003 all-star game in Oklahoma City.
