Special Olympics Competition Begins

The Area Management Team for Special Olympics Oklahoma Green Country Area announces the first of 5 fabulous fall events for local area athletes.

The Traditional Bowling Competition is scheduled for Saturday, 30 September, 2006 at Timber Lanes Bowling Center, 4701 South Elm Place, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.  Registration begins at 11:00 a.m. and competition begins at 12:00 p.m.

Last year's traditional bowling event drew 120 participants. This year we estimate 150 will join us on 30 September, 2006 for family-friendly entertainment.

To participate in Special Olympics programs, athletes must be at least 8 years of age and identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: mental retardation, cognitive delays, or significant learning or vocational problems.

Special Olympics Oklahoma Green Country Area provides sporting events and competition for athletes that live in Tulsa and Creek counties in Oklahoma as the local Tulsa affiliate of Special Olympics Oklahoma.

The Mission of Special Olympics is to provide a year-round program of sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with mental retardation and other closely related developmental disabilities.

Special Olympics Oklahoma was started in 1969 by the Tulsa Jaycees. The first competition was held at Skelly Stadium on the campus of the University of Tulsa where 200 Special Olympics athletes competed. Special Olympics Oklahoma is celebrated its 35th Anniversary in 2004. Today, thanks to Oklahomans, more than 8,600 Special Olympics athletes participate in more than 100 competitions and events on an annual basis. Competition is offered in 15 official sports. More than 1,700 coaches devote their time and experience to the athletes. There are over 11,000 volunteer opportunities available annually. Call 918-481-1234 for more information.
