Honoring our veterans

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a U.S. Army veteran and senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC),  joined U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) in introducing S. 1348, the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act.

This legislation calls for Americans to observe two minutes of silence on Veterans Day in honor of the service and sacrifice of every U.S. military veteran.

“This legislation brings Americans across the country together to honor and remember the commitment of our veterans – both past and present,” said Inhofe. “The selfless sacrifices of our servicemen and women have made our nation what it is today – a free and thriving democracy. Our nation owes them a debt of gratitude, and S. 1348 is a further way to show our appreciation.  I applaud our nation’s veterans and their invaluable service to protect our nation and its people.”

When Veterans’ Day, originally known as Armistice Day, was first observed in 1919, the concept for the observance was to suspend business for a two minute period beginning at 11 A.M. Today, observance of a moment of silence varies from community to community and business to business around the United States.  S. 1348 calls for Americans across the nation to officially hold a moment of silence for our nation’s servicemen and women on Veterans Day.
