JD McPherson tonight at Cain's
Tulsa's own rocker JD McPherson will be at Cain's Ballroom tonight.
Cain's (Tulsa's Timeless Honky Tonk) is located at 423 North Main Street in Tulsa. Showtime is 7:00 pm, and tickets are priced at $15.00 for general admission, and $25.00 for the mezzanine. Tickets can be purchased from Ticketfly.
2012 was a remarkable year for JD McPherson: his debut LP, Signs and Signifiers was released to rapturous reviews, and was the most-played album of the year on Americana radio. Most industry insiders expect 2013 to be even better.
McPherson and his band appeared on Conan, the Late Show with David Letterman and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and performed for wildly enthusiastic audiences all over the world. The video for McPherson’s “North Side Gal” was an internet smash, garnering over a million views since its release, and the song he penned for the holidays, “Twinkle (Little Christmas Lights)” was a surprise hit of the season and promises to become a perennial holiday fave.
McPherson and company have a great deal in store for their fans in a 2013: they’re kicking off the year with a run of European dates, and will start the next leg of their US tour in February.
“I have seen the future of the past, and his name is J.D. McPherson…Signs & Signifiers, a bracing collection of tailfin rockabilly, rawboned R&B, and sultry moonstruck balladeering. It is hands-down the feel-good record of the year” wrote the Philadelphia Inquirer.
“JD McPherson serves up rock 'n' roll straight, no chaser” Metro
“Timeless, forward-thinking rock & roll” Rolling Stone “A rockin', bluesy, forward-thinking album that subtly breaks the conventions of most vintage rock projects… the album is a gold mine of '50s-inspired rock and R&B, with some rockabilly twang thrown in for maximum effect.” All Music
Hailing from Broken Arrow, OK, (within the Metro Tulsa area for our worldwide readers) former art teacher McPherson traveled to Chicago to record Signs & Signifiers at Hi-Style studio, which is housed in the attic of producer/bassist/studio owner Jimmy Sutton’s home and is 100% analog.
“I have recorded this style of music in the digital realm, and it just doesn’t quite “sing” as much. Slamming that 1Ž4” tape really hard produced the most beautiful distortion I’ve ever heard,” says McPherson.
The album features JD McPherson (lead and backing vocals, guitar), Jimmy Sutton (bass), and Alex Hall (drums, piano, organ), the album was recorded through a collection of vintage microphones into an old 1960’s Berlant 1/4 inch tape machine. The 12-track recording kicks off with the fervent pulse of the first single, “North Side Gal,” and segues into one of the albums two covers, McPherson’s take on “Country Boy,” an old R&B number originally written and recorded by Tiny Kennedy.
