Student advances to national competition

Cheyenne King, age 10, a Harrah Middle School Student, will represent the states of Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arkansas in her age group at the National Hoop Shoot competition in Springfield, Mass. on May 23 - 26.  Other Regional winners going to Springfield are Jessica Venard, girls 8-9,  Perry Lodge #2629; and Bradley Hetherington, Boys 12-13, Sulphur/Davis Lodge #2079. 

Under the sponsorship of Midwest City Lodge #1890 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Cheyenne has won the age 10-11 girls Hoop Shoot competitions at the district, state, and regional levels.  She will go on to compete in the National Hoop Shoot competition.  At each level of competition, Cheyenne won a trophy and a certificate.  At the state level, she also received a sports jacket.

Cheyenne is one of more than three million boys and girls to participate in the program.  She is one of 72 competitors who will participate in the state finals.  Six national champions will be named at that competition – one boy and one girl in each of three categories:  ages 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13.  Winners at the national competition will receive a trophy and their names will be inscribed on a plaque at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.

Cheyenne’s mother, Cindy King, of Harrah, has accompanied her throughout the competition and was a guest of the Elks at the state and regional competitions and will also attend the national competition as a guest of the Elks.

The Elks “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Contest is the largest and most visible of the many youth activities sponsored by Elks Lodges.  Other Elks youth programs include Americanism Essay Contests, Scholarship Programs, Drug Awareness Programs and the Soccer Shoot Program.
