Folks if you’re burnt out on Christmas carols already and Holiday shopping has left you short with nothing, but change in your pocket. Don’t get the blues –celebrate them this Saturday night at the third annual Blue Society of Tulsa’s Christmas Party at The Vault, 106 S. Atlanta St.in Owasso.
Come out and enjoy live blues music from the local talent of -- the David Skinner band featuring Skinner on lead guitar and vocals, Tim Smith on drums, Bill Phillips on keyboard and vocals and Kevin Smith on bass. For more info on the band check ‘em out at http://www.davidskinnerband.com/
To get more for your buck, the cover at the door is just $5 and you may leave with free gifts up for grabs like CD’s and DVD’s. They will also be giving away 10 tickets for the upcoming Ian Moore and Dustin Pittsley show going on December 14th. “Tickets for this show are $15 bucks at the door, the day of the event,” President of the Blues Society, Bill Martin said.
The party kicks off at 8:30 p.m. and the live music starts at 9:30 p.m. The bar will be decorated and there will be a buffet with finger-foods and appetizers if you get hungry. Also sport your Santa cheeks with $2 dollar shot specials going on all night.
Anyone who wants to hear blues while getting their chow and drink on is welcomed, Martin said. He estimated 50 to 60 members of the Blues Society will attend.
“The mission on The Blues Society is to promote and preserve blues,” Martin said. They are doing this with an array of events the society puts on yearly like -- the Blues Choice Awards. The society just finished.
The event featured bands from North Eastern Oklahoma. There were four categories that musicians could win -- best lead, best rhythm, best vocalist and best band. Members got to vote who the winners were.
The Blues Society of Tulsa has been called one of the biggest in the world with nearly 400 hundred members. Martin was told this by the Blues Foundation which serves as a hub for the worldwide passion for Blues Music. The foundation has 160 affiliated blues organizations and members worldwide.
The society also has a program for kids with their “Best Blues in Schools Program” where members visit area schools with music presentations. They play guitar and harmonica for the kids while teaching life lesson testimonials in blues music.
The society puts out at bi-monthly publication called “Blues News” which is full of articles about local blues music, national and upcoming events. The cost of the subscription is $15 dollars for a single person which also includes a membership to society or you can buy a lifetime membership for $150 dollars.
