Oilers blanked by Bugs 6-0.
TULSA, OK—It was another Sunday afternoon game at the amazing BOK Center as the Tulsa Oilers hosted the Bossier Shreveport Mudbugs, a team they saw on the road just two nights ago. The road trip the Oilers just cam off of was a semi-successful one, in which the Tulsa squad lost both games, but thanks to the fact that one of those losses came in overtime they did manage to claim a point in the CHL standings, a valuable point that would stabilize the Oilers in the 5th and final playoff spot in the CHL North Conference thanks to a pair of losses by the teams ahead of and behind Tulsa, the Mississippi Riverkings and the Missouri Mavericks.
The Mudbugs came into the afternoons matchup with a record of 28-17- with 60 points, some 7 points ahead of Tulsa. Scott Muscutt’s perennial CHL powerhouse handed a 5-1 drubbing to the Wichita Thunder last night. Before game time two roster moves were announced fr Tulsa, first the signing goalie Marco Emond who was an Oiler in the 06-07 season and has the distinction of having won 3 championships with three different CHL teams, (Laredo, Colorado and Arizona), and Luke Stauffacher, who will play right wing.
Unfortunately, having a day off in between games with Bossier did very little to help the Oilers rest up as the Mudbugs erupted for four goals in the first period. It was an onslaught beginning at 5:01 when Mark Johnson found the net behind Marty Magers with Brett Smith assisting, then again at 10:16 when David Pszenyczny with David Rutherford and Justin Aikins. Shawn Limpright made it 3-0 at 12:10 with Jeff Kryzakos helping, and finally Joe Blaznek put his name on the scoreboard at 13:58 with Simon Mangos assisting. It was, in a word, Brutal to watch.
The Mudbugs scred four goals on12 shots while the Oilers were blanked by Ken Carroll on all 15 of theirs in the period. It appeared that most if not all of the Mudbug Goals saw Oiler defensemen allowing two guys to face Magers unprotected. Tulsa’s scoring chances were few and far between, as many attempted rushes on goal were quickly thwarted at or near the blue line by the flawless checking of the Mudbugs defensive corps.
Bossier got back to business early in the 2nd when David Rutherford scored with Tyrel Lucas assisting. The boat road deeper in the water when David Kryzakos scored his second goal at 12:08 unassisted. A total of six unanswered goals in two periods had the Tulsa Oilers in a VERY deep hole at the completion of two periods. The third period saw John DeCaro replace Ken Carroll…although it was hard to believe he was tired from the lack of activity he saw in the first two periods…and there was no scoring
With the loss the Oilers fall to 24-22-5 and remain at 53 points and no movement up or down in the standings as both the Missouri Mavericks and Mississippi Riverkings are idle today. The shutout loss was Tulsa’s first of the season and by far their worst loss since the Wichita Thunder beat them 5-1 in their second game of the season. The Oilers travel to Wichita on Wednesday night and Missouri on Friday night before facing the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs again next Saturday in the amazing BOK Ceenter at 7:35pm As always the games can be heard live at edgetulsa.com with Steve McCall providing the exciting play-by-play call.
